I'm going to meet with the communication team in Jakarta for a couple of days and then I will be off to West Timor for about a week to observe social analysis and formative research validation activities in Tengah Timur Utara (TTU) and Belu.
West Timor (known as Daratan Timor in Bahasa Indonesia) lies on Timor island in East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. This area consists of four districts: Kupang, Timor Tengah Selatan (TTS), Timor Tengah Utara (TTU), and Belu; and the municipality of the province. The population of West Timor has experienced a fluctuating nutritional crisis since 1992 as a result of repeated natural disasters over the past ten years. This has had a heavy impact on food security, and coping strategies have been undermined by economic and political crises. The Asian Economic Crisis in 1997 led to reduced purchasing power of households and reduced employment opportunities in East Timor (an important source of off-farm income) which was still part of Indonesia then, That same year, a severe drought caused almost total crop failure across West Timor. In 1999, 275,000 East Timorese refugees fled to West Timor to escape the violence surrounding the vote for independence causing a doubling of the population in some parts of West Timor. In 2007, drought, and at the same time flood in different parts of the island, have also contribute to the worsening of the nutritional crisis. West Timor continues to face a combination of acute and chronic food-security crises that leads to deteriorating nutritional and health status of its population, particularly among children under five and women.More to come...
